The South Australian Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) is the lead government agency responsible for developing the state’s energy, mining, petroleum and critical minerals sectors. DEM works closely with industry, regional communities and government partners to support investment, economic growth, energy transition and long-term industrial development across South Australia, with a strong focus on the Upper Spencer Gulf and Far North regions. The department also plays a key regulatory role, overseeing the safe, responsible and sustainable management of the state’s mineral, energy and petroleum resources.
DEM delivers policy, regulation, strategic infrastructure coordination and industry development across sectors including mining, critical minerals, copper, renewable energy, hydrogen, petroleum, manufacturing and industrial transformation. Key focus areas include driving the commercial and industrial strategy for the Northern Water Project, enabling future copper growth, supporting the Whyalla Steelworks transformation, strengthening regional supply chains and driving investment in sustainable industrial development. DEM also delivers Energy Advisory Services, providing education, advice and practical support to help households, businesses and communities improve energy efficiency, manage energy costs and navigate the energy transition.
The department supports major projects ranging from copper and critical minerals expansion through to renewable energy generation, transmission infrastructure, green steel, hydrogen, water security and regional economic development initiatives. DEM works alongside mining companies, infrastructure providers, local government, industry associations and regional businesses to help deliver South Australia’s transition to a globally competitive, low-carbon industrial economy.
